Back to something completely different

So I am still running.

I'll wait while you pick yourself up off of the floor.

I finished the Couch to 5K program (which is great, and if you don't run but want to, you should try it. You can find the program here.) and ran my first 5K on June 5th (the Race for the Cure in DC).

You can get back off the floor now. Or just stay there, you may end up hurting yourself if you keep falling over.

I was really slow, but I did it. And it felt pretty good.

So I've signed up for the Marine Corps 10K.

See, I told you to stay on the floor.

I am currently running three days a week for about 30 minutes. I can run for 30 minutes now without stopping (at the beginning of April, running for one minute was hard, so this is a big deal). But now, I am doing intervals to increase my speed. So I run for a minute, walk for a minute. It has increased my pre-race pace by about 2.5 minutes per mile. I'm still really slow, but I am pleased with the improvement. and I really think the 10K will be doable. and I have until October 31 to train.

I am really liking running, and am beginning to see changes in my body too. And this is a sport I can do even when overseas. Which is nice.

I am beginning to think that getting a hat like my wife's is within reach.

Though my new goal is to run a marathon before I head back overseas in 2011, probably the Shamrock Marathon (which is where my wife got her hat for the 1/2 marathon), so the hat I would get will be even cooler.

Yeah, just stay on the floor.

If you can do a 5k now, you could be ready to do a full marathon by the end of October. I know it sounds crazy, but really you could be. You've already gotten part the hard part (getting off the couch and running 30 minutes straight is a HUGE accomplishment!). Good for you for getting out there.

I LOVE Couch to 5K, though whenever I start it I get stuck at the first week. This post KINDA makes me crave a Shamrock Shake...I took the FSOT on Saturday, so hopefully I'll be joining you soon :-)

WooHoo! Way to go! Totally impressed! I have looked at the couch to 5k program before, but I'm intimidated. Did you download the program on itunes as well or just keep track of the times yourself? How hard was it really?

As I am typing this Dave is reading a book about a dog named Digger playing in the rain to the little one. He can't understand why I find this so funny. It takes so little to amuse me.

It amuses me too Shannon!

I downloaded Robert Ullery's free podcasts from itunes. I found it much easier that keeping track of the time myself (because a minute seems REALLY LONG if you are looking at your watch and gasping for air). There are some apps for iphones that will time it for you while you listen to your own music, but alas, I do not have an iphone (or a droid).

And anonymous, I know I probably could do a marathon by October, but I am not sure I could do it without injuring myself. And I don't want to chance doing that so early on in my attempts to be a runner. Besides, my wife is already saying I am more "ambitious" a runner than she is because she didn't attempt a 10K until she had been running for well over a year and won't do her first marathon until October.
